Welcome!
Dear readers,
fellow Planetarians,
Here you will find impressions and information about my different planetarium projects
from the last decades.
The years 2024 and 2025 mark the centenary of the invention of the projection planetarium.
For this occasion I wrote and produced a 35-minute planetarium program with the
Title “One Hundred Years of Eternity”. There are now more than a dozen translations of the program
in languages from different world and cultural regions. A short television report about the project can be found here..
An excerpt can be found a little further down on this page.
A 58-minute planetarium program based on “One Hundred Years of Eternity” entitled
“Our heavenly story” has been available for German-speaking planetariums since the middle of this year.
The program, wonderfully read by Hans Peter Bögel, is currently running in the Planetariums in Hamburg
and Bochum.
Under the menu item "Portfolio" you can find information about past planetarium programs such as
“The Silver Sail” or “Cirque de la Sphere” and initiatives such as the “DIVE – Festival for Immersive Arts”.
If you are interested in one of the projects or have any questions, please get in touch.
Yours,
Tobias Wiethoff
100 years of eternity
Hardly anything has shaped the history of civilization as much as man's confrontation with the heavens.
Megalithic stone circles bear witness to this, as do the astronomical origins of science in ancient Greece
or the technical principles of modern high seas navigation. Even prehistoric sites tell of the important role
the heavens have always played for people, whether in their practical everyday lives or as a repository for
mythological imaginings spanning the generations.
The planetarium is the latest representation in a long series of sites and inventions reaching far back
into human history that served our preoccupation with the starry heavens and the cosmos
surrounding us. On the occasion of the centennial of the invention of the projection planetarium,
we embark on a journey which begins with the early cultures of mankind and leads along an
ever-changing view of the heavens to the modern star theater.
